Selecting Bias-Free Picture Books for Young Children

Abstract

Every book lover knows the joy that comes with shopping at a favourite bookstore. One can lose all track of time during the experience. Teachers rarely find the search for books to read to their class as being this enjoyable. The responsibility of selecting a literacy-rich and authentic book that may become the focus of a literacy unit can be tiresome. Armed with a plan of what to look for, and the biases to avoid, the search can be easier than one first thought–with results aimed at finding children’s literature that depicts story characters and illustrations in ways that foster self-esteem and self-respect.
